I recently bought a number of ostrich leg hides in an array of colours. If you haven’t seen the leg hides before, they are a fabulous thing being reptilian in nature. Ostrich leg is perfect for making watch straps due to the small hide size and I cut mine on the diagonal to achieve a varied texture and pattern along the length.
The first strap I made was a simple traditional construction of ostrich upper with calf lining and a subtle padding. The edges were burnished and finished with three coats of matching Vernis.
Although extremely pleased with the overall appearance and finish the strap it, felt on the thin side and not quite part of the Corium DNA. My straps are usually at least 4mm thick and have a reassuring presence, so I set about making a mk2, this time with a central core of premium full grain leather in the laminate bringing it up to a 4+mm thick strap. I think it’s the business and if you want one, email me and I’ll be happy to hand craft one for you.
